Can you use Nespresso pods twice?

You can use Nespresso pods twice in the following ways:

  • By reusing regular Nespresso pods
  • By using reusable Nespresso pods
  • By using a refillable Nespresso pod kit
  • By reusing the same Nespresso pods and used grounds without refilling

How to reuse regular Nespresso pods

To reuse Nespresso pods via the refilling and resealing method, follow the steps detailed below:

  1. Once the used pod has cooled down, remove the foil and throw away the old coffee grounds. Then, rinse out the pod using fresh water.
  2. Refill the pod with fresh coffee grounds, leaving a 1-millimeter space at the top. Wipe away any leftover coffee grounds from the edges of the pod.
  3. Cut out a piece of aluminum foil in a circular shape. The foil should be about 1 centimeter larger than the top of the Nespresso pod.
  4. Seal the ground-filled pod using the circular foil by placing it at the top and wrapping it steadily around the edges. Finally, press down to ensure the pod’s coffee grounds are completely sealed.

Note that when reusing normal Nespresso pods and you seal them with plain foil, it’s lik ly th t the pods won’t e ful y sealed. This is a common issue that results in poor coffee extraction and water leaking through the pod’s edges. That’s why it’s best to use reusable Nespresso pods.

How to reuse reusable Nespresso pods

To brew Nespresso coffee using reusable Nespresso pods, follow the procedure detailed below:

i. Choose between plastic and stainless steel reusable Nespresso pods. These pods are available for both Nespresso VertuoLine and Nespresso OriginalLine brewers.

ii. Also, choose a reusable pod with your preferred type of lid. If you want to avoid the inconvenience of having to reseal your Nespresso capsule every time you reuse it, go for a pod with a permanent latching lid. The problem with this type of pod is it produces weaker-tasting espresso with less crema.

The other alternative is a sticker-sealed reusable pod, which you’ll have to reseal every time but produces better-tasting coffee with more crema.

iii. Ensure you use the right grind size to avoid brewing a watery or bitter cup of espresso. Use fine grind coffee for reusable small vertuo pods. Meanwhile, for a reusable cup-size vertuo pod, use medium-grind coffee.

iv. After filling up the reusable pod with coffee grounds, firmly tamp the grounds to pack them tightly. You can do this using your thumb or a spoon. This is important since loosely packed coffee grounds produce a watery brew.

After filling the reusable pod and tamping the grounds, ensure a little space left at the brim to allow for proper sealing.

How to reuse refillable Nespresso pods

Refillable Nespresso pods are meant for Nespresso VertuLine brewers and aren’t the same as reusable Nespresso pods. The latter is meant to be used multiple times, whereas the former are pod kits that allow for the refilling and sealing of Nespresso VertuoLine capsules.

Remember, Nespresso VertuoLine brewers use special pods with barcodes imprinted onto them.

A Nespress refillable pod kit includes 100 aluminum foil seal lids. Therefore, to reuse Nespresso VertuoLine pods, remove the foil seal and dump the used coffee grounds. Then, clean the pod and refill it with fresh coffee grounds. Finally, reseal the capsule using one of the foil seals included in the kit.

To ensure that you properly seal the Vertuo pod, use the brush included in the po kit o depress the outer edges of the foil lid against the pod. This enables the pod to withstand the brewing pressure for optimal extraction. But, how big is Gran Lungo Coffees?

How to reuse Nespresso pods without refilling

Finally, you can simply reuse a used Nespresso pod by running another brew cycle without replacing the used coffee grounds inside the pod. However, this is the most ineffective way to reuse Nespresso capsules.

The coffee will taste weaker as most of the flavor compounds have already been extracted during the original brew cycle.
